HYPE-4 Snowstorms in 10 Days?
Hello this is Junior Meteorologist Kyle Elliott with a special report devoted strictly to HYPE...so hope ya'll had a great Christmas Day and I just thought I'd leave ya'll with some more excellent news to top off this Christmas...that of SNOW CHANCES! Well chances is the key word there, but I am starting to see a pattern shift that might mean more chances at snow for us here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Anyway, I won't go into that...I'll just give ya'll the good stuff! In the next 10 days, there are chances for not one, not two, not three, but four snowstorms as multiple storm systems move through our area with marginal cold air in place. The first chance I see that we could get snow is tomorrow evening into tomorrow night as the coastal storm moves up the coast and spreads precipitation into our area. Now don't get excited as temperatures probably will be too warm to supports snow...and even if it is cold enough to snow, don't look for much as we will only be grazed by the storm with no more than a dusting to a half inch of snow. So that is the first chance...the second chance comes the day after that on Thursday as another quick moving storm system sweeps through our area. Again, cold air will be marginal and the majority of the moisture will move north of our region...but the possibility is there for a dusting to a quick half inch of snow sometime on Thursday morning or afternoon. The third chance at snow...and a better one at that as I see it at this point...will not come until Sunday as a storm system forms along the Gulf Coast and moves northeastward along the Eastern Seaboard. This go around, slightly colder air should be in place as highs struggle to reach 38 or 39 degrees on Sunday. Now of course, that is still too warm for snow, but things could change for the colder...or for the warmer...but I don't want to think about that second possibility right now. This opportunity will have to be watched a little closer as early GFS model runs show our area getting a good 3-5 inch snowstorm...but I am still skeptical at the present time of that snow possibility too. But...there is still that fourth and final chance at seeing a decent snowstorm across our area...and right now this appears like the GRANDDADDY CHANCE on January 2nd as a very cold air mass comes into our area keeping highs 35 degrees or lower. I'm not really sure on the details of the storm yet, but if a storm does develop and head our way it sure does appear as if enough cold air will be in place to support snow. I don't want to go into any more details on any of these snow possibilites right now, but I will say that I think we will only see one snowstorm out of the four chances in the next 10 days...and I think it will either be the weekend storm or the January 2nd storm...the other two just don't have much moisture with them and little if any cold air to work with. So before I get ya'll too excited or just about kill my own self with excitement, I'll refrain for the evening and talk to ya'll tomorrow! So hope ya'll had a great Christmas and have a great rest of your evening!
