"SuperStorm" Wrap-Up!

Hello this is Junior Meteorologist Kyle Elliott with a wrap-up on this past weekend’s “SuperStorm”…and in reality, it turned out to be anything but that as one word could summarize the storm: DISAPPOINTING! For most folks who wanted to see snowfall and had it in the forecast, it DID NOT HAPPEN! About the only places that saw snowfall worth talking about from this storm were central to northern New York, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware basically saw nothing at all save a few places in western Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania who saw decent accumulating snowfall. The highest storm total I saw from any given location was 19.2 inches…fairly low seeing as many places were forecast to get 18 inches plus. Basically, anybody in the I-95 corridor from Boston to Washington, D.C. saw nothing to speak of as warm air both at the surface and aloft caused either a mix of sleet and freezing rain or just plain rain for those areas. There was quite a severe ice storm from southern New York to northern and western Maryland, but even that did not cause too much damage except for in the higher terrain. So to sum this storm up, I would have to say that I, my colleague, and most all meteorologists did not do the greatest of jobs forecasting this storm until a few hours before it hit. Then and only then did we change our forecasts to at least somewhat resemble what actually came to fruition. So this storm was not very well forecasted until the last minute and one that I will always remember as pretty much just a “SuperBust,” not a “SuperStorm!” Well that just about summarizes this storm up, so I will post my daily weather pattern discussion shortly and tell ya’ll if any new storm possibilities are in store for the next week or so. So talk to ya’ll soon! This is Junior Meteorologist (Storm Tracker) Kyle Elliott reporting for the AKStormtracker Forecasting Center, in Storm Disappointment Mode!
